Overview
The Responsible Conduct of Research and Scholarship (RCRS) is part of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts’ and the University of Michigan’s commitment to fostering and upholding the highest ethical standards in the conduct of research and scholarship as well as following all federal and state guidelines regarding RCRS training.
On July 28, 2020, the University of Michigan Office for Vice President for Research updated the University’s requirement for RCRS training to include all employees and students engaged in research and scholarship. This training requirement applies to all U-M employees and students engaged in any facet of research and scholarship, regardless of internal or external support, including (but not limited to):
- Publishing activities (journal articles, book writing, literary criticism, legal research, technical and institutional research reports, literature reviews and historical scholarship, among other forms)
- Oral or poster presentations of research/scholarship
- Collection and analysis of data, information, biospecimens or records
- Inclusion as personnel on sponsored research or scholarship grants/awards
- Inclusion as personnel on internally funded research or scholarship grants/awards
- Development and/or leadership of centers that generate new knowledge, research or scholarship
- Media contributions
- Creative expression/performance and visual arts activities (compositions, presentations, performances, exhibits and similar projects)
There are now two levels of RCRS training:
- PEERRS-RCRS online course
- In-person Instructor-led training
Anyone engaged in any facet of research and scholarship, regardless of internal or external support shall complete the PEERRS-RCRS online course.
Additionally, all Rackham Graduate School Ph.D students, regardless of funding sources, and any undergrads, master's students, postdocs, or faculty who are NIH-supported trainees, fellows, participants, and scholars must ALSO take an in-person instructor-led RCRS course. For more information on the Rackham policy, please see Section 4.2 of the Doctoral Degrees website.
PEERRS-RCRS completion certifications are valid for three (3) years from the last completion date.
New hires must complete training within 30 days of the start of their employment. The Responsible Conduct of Research and Scholarship (RCRS) training course can be found at MyLinc or by clicking here.
