This session will introduce the main theme of this semester’s series, student engagement in the context of language learning. After an overview of the current research on student engagement, we will discuss its relevance to everyday’s language teaching and learning practice.
About the Discussant:
Jana Martin serves as the Associate Director of the Language Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. With the goal to strengthen and promote the teaching and learning of languages, Jana’s role focuses on the development of lecture series, workshops, and other professional development programs for faculty and staff in the departments of languages, linguistics, literatures, and cultures. Jana’s native language is Slovak and she earned her PhD in German with a doctoral minor in Second Language Acquisition from UW-Madison in 2016. Jana’s research interests include intersubjectivity in the language classroom, student and teacher beliefs, and student motivation and engagement.
