The Confederate attack on Fort Sumter 150 years ago incited the Civil War, the bloodiest conflict in U.S. history. The William L. Clements Library exhibit “Opening Guns: The First Year of Civil War” brings to life the early years of the conflict through letters, pictures, and memorabilia. The perspectives of those who experienced the war—soldiers, commanding officers, politicians, and family members at home—are all included. Click through this interactive display to view items featured in the exhibit as well as additional Civil War pieces from the Clements Library.
