Professor Lewis will draw heavily from her new book, Divided Rule: Sovereignty and Empire in French Tunisia, 1881-1938, (University of California Press, 2013) in her Conversations on Europe talk.
Mary Lewis is professor of history at Harvard University. Her current research interests center around the international and imperial history of France, the history of rights, and the connections between international relations and everyday local life. Her first book, The Boundaries of the Republic: Migrant Rights and the Limits of Universalism in France, 1918-1940 (Stanford University Press, 2007), was a winner of the 2008 James Willard Hurst Prize awarded by the Law and Society Association for the best book in socio-legal history. It was translated into French by Editions Agone in 2010.
