Conversations on Europe. "Milan's Chinatown: The Chinese in Italy's Cultural Imagination."

The talk will focus on the film "Giallo a Milano (Made in Chinatown)."

Abstract: Professor Parati’s presentation is part of a book project on migration of urban space that she is currently writing. In particular, the talk will focus on the film "Giallo a Milano (Made in Chinatown),” that deals with the representation of Chinese immigrants in the Northern Italian city. Her presentation will include discussion of the history of Chinese immigration to Italy from the 1920s to today and an analysis of the complex representation of the Chinese characters in the film. In order to talk about them, she will devote some time to talking about the process of "making a city transitive," that is of re-making the city through language.
