“A couple of summers ago, I had the opportunity to work at a local wealth management firm on a project involving the construction of a hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The internship was a clear choice for me as a business student, and while I have a rather international background, working on a budget for an international project is what truly persuaded me to pursue an International Studies major.
As someone who has lived in Saudi Arabia and travels to Lebanon frequently, I have always known that one day, I would make my way back to the Middle East, regardless of the industry I choose. During my internship, I experienced the cultural barriers and other complications that arise during international projects. Something as simple as differing workweeks created logistical complications. Aside from the technical difficulties, I saw firsthand how varying communication styles, interests, and political states were vital considerations for the success of an international venture. After that summer, I became curious about global cultures and the problems faced by multinational businesses in operating across borders.
Not only does my International Studies major perfectly supplement my business major in piquing my interests, it also opens a whole new realm of potential courses that have exposed me to various cultures and operations worldwide. As soon as I began my International Studies major, I was able to find classes that tied together my love of the Middle East and my interest on global health, and I am looking forward to continuing my pursuit of knowledge of international affairs!”
Future plans: “In the near future, I am hoping to find myself in healthcare consulting. The International Studies 301 class I took last year about global health played a major role in this decision. After learning about the nuances of healthcare worldwide, I am hoping that in the future, I will be able to work towards solutions that mitigate the current challenges faced by health systems across the globe. A long term goal of mine is to return to the Middle East to work, whether in healthcare or elsewhere. I am confident that the courses I take for my International Studies major will allow me to develop the necessary toolkit to achieve my goals in any location worldwide.”
