Film Screening of Cuba: An African Odyssey

Tuesday, March 6, 2012
5:00 AM
2435 North Quad, 105 S. State St.

In this documentary, which is part of the "Women Visualizing Africa" film series, El-Tahri returns to the unforgotten and untold story of the intense relationship between Cuba and the continent of Africa. This revealing, award-winning documentary adds to our understanding of the Cold War through its least-known context: Africa. From 1961 to 1991, the Dark Continent was a battleground for four different competing interests. From Che Guevara’s efforts in the Congo to the triumphant battle at Cuito Cuanavale, Cuba: An African Odyssey tells the story of those internationalists who won their battles but ultimately lost the War. French w/ English subtitles. Showing is FREE and open to the public. Q & A with filmmaker follows showing.
Co-sponsors of the film series include LACS, the African Studies Center, and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS), the Department of Comparative Literature (Year of Anachronism), Institute for the Humanities, International Institute (II), Institute for Research on Women and Gender ((IRWG), Rackham School of Graduate Studies, the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures (RLL), Center of Education on Women (CEW), Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies (CMENAS), Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), and the College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA).
