Graduate Workshop, "Revolución, emancipación, y ciudadanía: entre la revolución de Haití y la guerra de 1912 en Cuba”

Marial Iglesias is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Havana and holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Moscow and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Havana. Professor Iglesias was awarded the 2006 Clarence Haring Prize from the American Historical Association for her book, Las Metáforas del Cambio en la Vida Cotidiana: Cuba, 1898-1902 (Havana: Ediciones UNION, 2003).This paper traces a family of French planters, the people enslaved on their plantation, and their descendants through the Caribbean over more than a century. It examines the workings of emancipation and citizenship in shifting contexts, starting with the Haitian Revolution and ending with the 1912 war in Cuba.(Co-sponsored by the Law in Slavery and Freedom Project)Open to the Public(A light lunch will be served during the workshop)
