About
Shelby Newport is a professor of theatre in the Department of Fine & Performing Arts at the University of Michigan-Flint. She is also the chair of the Department of Fine & Performing Arts and Graduate Program Director for the Master of Arts in Arts Administration. Shelby has been leading study abroad courses since 2011, and her current focus is teaching Design Thinking through collaborative experiential learning in Japan with her colleague and co-instructor from the UM-Flint School of Management. Her research interests include Japanese craft techniques including ceramics and textiles and global historical fashion.
Shelby received her MFA from Purdue University in 2009 and her undergraduate degree from Cornell College. As a costume designer, Shelby has worked at a number of regional theaters including Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Great River Shakespeare Festival and Glimmerglass Opera. Shelby regularly designs costumes for new plays debuting at Tipping Point Theatre, Flint Repertory Theatre, and she is a Resident Artist at The Purple Rose Theatre Company. She has also designed productions at Detroit Public Theatre, Cornell College, and Kickshaw Theatre. Her design work has also been seen internationally at the Turner Contemporary Museum in Margate, England.
