About
Lisa Fein is a sociologist who studies gender, ethnic inequality, and citizenship. Her previous research focused on the transformation of social inequalities during periods of rapid social change. Drawing on qualitative research conducted in Estonia, she examined the discursive construction of ethnic boundaries and citizenship identities among ethnic Estonians and Russian-speaking residents. Her current research explores negotiations of gendered rituals and practices, including weddings, among individuals who identify as trans and gender non-binary. She has published articles in Administrative Science Quarterly, Citizenship Studies, and Political & Military Sociology.
Lisa received her A.B. in Russian area studies from Columbia University and earned her Ph.D. in sociology, as well as M.A. degrees in sociology and Russian and East European studies, at the University of Michigan. After graduation, she taught sociology at Westminster College in Missouri.
