Kunwoo's primary interest lies in medieval Chinese Buddhist scholasticism.

His previous research examined the reasoning behind the use of the concept of inconceivability within The Awakening of Faith in the Mahāyāna.

He hopes to explore the historical context in which Chinese Buddhist doctrinal texts were written, and how it may have influenced their content.
