A recent article by The Michigan Daily examines how funding cuts last fall will affect language and area studies programs moving forward. The majority of the $3.4 million in lost funding comes from the Foreign Languages and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships and National Resource Centers (NRC).

In the article, II Director Youngju Ryu explains, "The federal funding cuts that resulted in the loss of $3.4 million this year, happened even though this was money that had already been appropriated by the Congress."

Speaking about the impact on students, African Studies Center Director Omolade Adunbi said, "I do not want to see students forgo higher education just because they are not able to pay tuition or decide not to pursue their life long goals of becoming an international expert just because they are not able to pay their tuition."

International Institute students also expressed concerns about funding their academic endeavors now that the grants they were relying on have been cut.
