Organized by the University of Michigan’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and International Institute, in partnership with the University of Puerto Rico, the Global Environmental Justice and Praxis: Action, Advocacy, and Learning in the Classroom event featured workshops for teacher professional development and cross-cultural collaboration in education. This initiative brought together 28 educators from Puerto Rico and seven teachers from the mainland U.S. in Mayagüez to exchange teaching methodologies and perspectives on environmental justice and sustainability.
Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) Spanish teachers Kristi Shaffer and Marieta McGraw participated in site visits, including a fishing village impacted by climate change and a school with a community garden researching climate issues. They are integrating these experiences into their curricula to empower students as change agents.
Scarlett Middle School teacher Wanda Toro-Zambrana, a previous facilitator, continues to support the program, emphasizing the importance of linking local and global practices through education.
