Faculty Funding

Program Summary

This support will be awarded only in cases where other sources of funding are exhausted or inadequate. Applicants, if they have not already done so, are strongly encouraged to apply to their respective Schools/Colleges and departments and other U-M units for travel funds before applying to the Center. Recipients of this support must comply with the University and government's travel-related policies and procedures. The funds will be provided as reimbursements of travel expenses in compliance with the University and International Institute's travel guidelines. Candidates must secure approval prior to travel.

Eligibility

CJS Members and Associates attending professional meetings in the United States or overseas to give papers, chair panels, act as discussants, or serve in an executive capacity. Limit:one grant award per person annually.

Up to $750 per trip for domestic travel
Up to $1,500 per trip for International

Program Summary

These grants are awarded on a competitive basis to support development of 1) courses that have significant Japan-related content or 2) courses that integrate Japan-related material in a comparative framework or as a case study.  Because these grants are designed to promote innovation, whether in content, method, or technology, priority will be given to proposals for new or substantially revised courses.  Interdisciplinary and team-taught courses are encouraged.  Items considered appropriate for funding under this program include, but are not limited to:

• Developing digital teaching resources (e.g., PowerPoint, CTools, Google Apps for Education, etc.)
• Research assistance for compiling bibliography and developing curriculum
• Developing opportunities for student fieldwork, research, or collaborative projects as part of a course
• Subvention of workshop and conference registration fees/tuition for the purpose of pedagogical training
• No direct travel costs (airfare, lodging, per diem) can be funded under this grant program.  

Eligibility

Full-time University of Michigan faculty, librarians, and curators who will be teaching courses in the future.

Amount

From $250 to $1,500 per course. (These funds will not cover faculty salary.)

Program Summary

These grants are awarded on a competitive basis to any University faculty member, across the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses, pursuing research on any aspect of Japan, including comparative, pan-regional, and transnational approaches.

Grants may support individual or group projects. Funds can be used to provide support for the principal researcher’s course buyout, University of Michigan and non-UM research assistants, external consultants, translators/interpreters, travel, lodging, meals, project-related supplies and equipment, and omiyage up to $250. Grants do not provide funding for summer salaries.

The Center requests acknowledgment of its sponsorship and one copy of any publication(s) issued in book form resulting from research funded by this grant program. The Center also may require awardees to make a presentation of research findings in its future lecture series or request their contribution to other programs at the Center’s discretion and at a time convenient to awardees and the Center.

Eligibility

University of Michigan faculty members across the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses doing research on Japan, including comparative, pan-regional, and transnational approaches.

Amount

From $500 to $30,000 per project.

Program Summary

The Fund provides up to $10,000 to help support the organization of conferences seminars, workshops, and lecture series by CJS Members and Associates. Teams of two or more faculty, including a CJS Member or Associate as the principal investigator (PI), are eligible to apply (see the Eligibility section below for more details) with preference given to proposals that seek to foster interdisciplinary scholarship and the crossing of regional boundaries.

The PI will serve as the primary contact person. Funds will be disbursed by CJS to the PI’s home unit, which will have primary responsibility for hosting the event. All proposals require the signature of the key administrator of the PI’s home unit, acknowledging the unit’s involvement in hosting the proposed event.

Eligibility

Groups of two or more faculty are eligible to propose an event. The principal investigator should be a CJS Member or Associate. Current and former Toyota Visiting Professors may propose an event in partnership with a CJS Member/Associate.

Amount

Up to $10,000 per seminar/workshop.

Deadline

November 30 and March 30, annually.

Application Review Process & Guidelines

After submission, all applicants are expected to meet with CJS staff to discuss the proposed budget and logistics of the event; changes to the proposal can be made in response to this meeting. Final proposals will be reviewed by the Executive Committee with applicants notified by the Center approximately eight weeks after the application deadline.

The guidelines are as follows:

• Groups of two or more faculty are eligible to propose an event. The principal investigator should be a CJS Member or Associate. Current and former Toyota Visiting Professors may propose an event in partnership with a CJS Member/Associate.
• Priority will be given to events that include a public component and/or a graduate-student-oriented component. These events should be open not only to UM faculty and students, but also to faculty and students from universities in the surrounding area.
• The proposed events should be multi-disciplinary.
• Events that cross regional boundaries are encouraged.
• Partnerships with other Michigan centers and programs, both those within the International Institute and without, are encouraged.
• Funds will be disbursed by CJS to the PI’s home unit which will assume responsibility for oversight of funds and for running the event.
• UM’s travel expense policy and LSA’s hosting policy will apply.
