Student Organization Funding

Student Organization Funding Guidelines

CJS supports U-M student organizations’ Japan-related, educational events/activities and accepts funding applications on a rolling basis. The Center strongly encourages applicants to apply to other (U-M and/or external) funding sources as well and prefers to fund activities as a co-sponsor. Information on other U-M funding opportunities is available on University websites.

To review applications efficiently and allocate the limited funds in a fair and effective manner, the Center requests that applicants follow the procedures below.

Eligibility

Undergraduate and graduate student organizations that are registered with the U-M Office of Student Activities and Leadership and have valid SOAS (Student Organization Accounts Service) accounts are eligible to apply.

Application Procedures & Deadline

Submit the following items by email to umcjs@umich.edu no later than 6 weeks before the proposed events/activities.

  1. A statement describing:
    • your organization.
    • the proposed event/activity (including its date, location, and relationship with Japan and education).
    • a list of proposed panelists/speakers, if the event includes a panel/lectures.
  2. The entire, detailed budget of the proposed event/activity and the amount requested from CJS.
  3. A list of other funding sources and amounts (including funding applications currently under review).
  4. The shortcode of your organization’s SOAS account to which the CJS funds would be transferred.

General Requirements for Funded Events/Activities

CJS requires that the Center be listed as a sponsor in funded events/activities’ promotional materials. All funded applicants are required to submit a brief report (including the number of participants) no later than 3 weeks after the events/activities.
