JLPT Fee Grant

To receive this grant, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Currently enrolled in a degree program at the University of Michigan
• Registered for course(s) during the fall term on the Ann Arbor campus, or on approved detached study status (CJS MA students only) or on approved extramural study status (PhD students only)
• In good academic standing
• Registered to take Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level N1, N2 or N3
• Registered for a test administered in the United States
• Graduate students are only eligible for Levels N1 and N2; undergraduate students are eligible for Levels N1, N2 and N3.
• Students who have received funding from this program in previous years (or JLPT Travel Grant in 2011) may not reapply for funding to retake the test at the same level but may apply for funding to take a higher level test.

This grant works as a reimbursement.  Students must first register for the appropriate test and pay the registration fee in full.  Then eligible students may apply for this grant and receive a partial reimbursement of the registration fee.  Proof of registration is required to receive the grant.  For registration instructions, see the JLPT website.

As a condition of receiving this grant, students agree to submit a copy of their official score report to the Center when they receive their scores.

The award amount varies between $50 and $90 depending on the applicant's student status (graduate or undergraduate) and financial need (as determined by eligibility for need-based financial aid).

CJS accepts applications for students who have registered for the December administration of the test beginning September 15.  Students must first register for the test and obtain a proof of registration before applying for this grant.  For more information on test registration, see the JLPT website.

Application must be submitted online on the International Institute Application and Nominations site on the LSA InfoReady Review system. In the list of open applications, look for the CJS JLPT Fee Grant, and click on the title for more details. Use the Apply button to start an application, and use the blue University of Michigan Login button to login with your uniqname. Online application opens and becomes visible on September 15 and is due on October 15.

Grant awards will be disbursed through the student account.  Students receiving need based financial aid should be aware that the acceptance of this grant may result in an adjustment of their need-based financial aid package.  International students from countries without a tax treaty exemption for student scholarships are subject to a income tax withholding on the amount of this grant.
