CJS Affiliate Program

CJS has been a hub of interdisciplinary research for faculty and researchers from a variety of disciplines and professional schools at the University of Michigan who are substantially engaged in research and/or teaching on Japan or have an interest in Japanese studies. To expand this intellectual community and develop a local Japanese studies community, CJS launched a pilot program called CJS Affiliates in 2012. The program is designed to reach out to alumni of U-M graduate and professional programs who are engaged in research and/or teaching on Japan or have an interest in Japanese studies, to non-UM-alumni scholars at other institutions in the region (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois*) engaged in research and/or teaching on Japan, and to former U-M faculty, visiting instructional faculty, visiting scholars, and postdoctoral fellows who are nominated by CJS members

* Illinois has been recently added to this regional program on the condition that applicants must be nominated by CJS members.

Eligibility

Those in one of the following three categories are eligible to apply:

  1. Alumni of U-M graduate or professional programs who are engaged in research and/or teaching on Japan or have an interest in Japanese studies.
  2. Scholars based at colleges or universities in the region (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois*) who are engaged in research and/or teaching on Japan, including U-M adjunct faculty/researchers as well as UMHS residents.
  3. Former U-M faculty, visiting instructional faculty, visiting scholars, visiting graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and CJS event guests who are nominated by CJS members.

 * Illinois has been recently added to this regional program on the condition that applicants must be nominated by CJS members.

Application Deadlines

September 30 and March 31 annually. All complete applications are reviewed by the CJS Executive Committee and applicants will be notified of decisions.

Term

Membership in the CJS Affiliate program will be based primarily on researchers having a substantial research interest in Japan. It is expected that all Affiliates will follow relevant policies and guidelines for use of university resources and conduct. Affiliate membership will be reviewed at the end of every three-year period beginning in October 2020 by the Executive Committee, who will determine whether to renew or revoke Affiliate status.

Benefits

  • CJS Affiliates are included in CJS’s email list and receive notices of academic events and research/funding opportunities.
  • Regular faculty from other universities and colleges in the State of Michigan as well as from Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) member institutions are eligible for free borrowing privileges at the U-M Library. For Affiliates who do not fall under this category, CJS can assist with acquiring free borrowing privileges as a U-M Library “Visiting Scholar.”
  •  CJS Affiliates are eligible for a uniqname (a U-M computing ID).  UM alumni are encouraged to keep their uniqname (free of charge for limited services) rather than acquire a new one through the CJS Affiliate Program; for details, please contact the
    U-M Information and Technology Services.
  • UM alumni are encouraged to keep their MCards and renew them on their own. For details, please see the MCard website. For non-UM-alumni Affiliates, CJS can assist with the MCard application.
