About
Research in the Wearing Group focuses on photocatalysis and photochemistry as an enabling approach to access challenging reactivity. By studying the mechanisms of photocatalytic processes, we aim to develop new strategies to overcome limitations in photochemical reactivity and design novel photocatalytic transformations to form valuable organic molecules. Our group couples modern technologies such as machine learning and computational approaches with mechanistic study grounded in physical organic chemistry principles for comprehensive understanding of structure reactivity relationships, prediction of new photocatalysts, and deeper knowledge of photochemical processes. With this mechanistically driven approach, we will develop new synthetic methods to achieve challenging transformations including reactions of traditionally unreactive substrates, selective methods for currently unselective reactions, and new approaches for enantioselective photocatalysis.
The Wearing Group is recruiting graduate students and postdoctoral scholars for start dates in 2027. Prospective graduate students should apply to the Chemistry Graduate Program and are welcome to connect with Emily via email. Prospective postdoctoral candidates should submit an application containing a cover letter, CV, and research statement via the email listed above.
