Transfer Credit Policies & Procedures

If you are a student who has recently transferred to the University of Michigan, and intend to take Chemistry courses such as Chem 130, 210, or, 215, read this first - it will inform you about what to expect in our classes.

ONLINE Transfer Class Update:

Per LSA policy, the Department of Chemistry will accept transfer credit equivalency for all courses evaluated and approved, even if the course is taken through online delivery. However, we note that we cannot guarantee these courses will still provide adequate preparation for subsequent coursework in our, or other, departments.

If you take an online course equivalent to one of the lecture courses we offer, and would like to self-assess your preparation for the next chemistry course in your sequence, you can contact Angie Cox (chemundergrad@umich.edu) in our main Chemistry office after you have completed the online course. She will give you access to a voluntary self-assessment exam, that is comparable to the final exam in our equivalent course, so you can determine the extent to which you have mastered the material you need for the next class. You can then use this information to decide whether you wish to proceed to the next course, or if you would be better served re-taking the UM version of the course you transferred.

Online self-assessment exams will be available for Chem 130 (in anticipation of subsequent enrollment in 200-level chemistry coursework), Chem 210 (in anticipation of subsequent enrollment in Chem 215), Chem 215 (in anticipation of subsequent enrollment in Chem 351, 419, or 420), and Chem 230 (in anticipation of Chem 351, 419, or 420).

Transfer Credit

The Department of Chemistry allows students to take and transfer courses from other institutions to UM for prerequisite and major credit through the departmental approval process.  Transfer courses may be applied toward your major.  Approval for credit of courses transferred from another institution toward your major requirements must go through the Department of Chemistry Transfer Credit Evaluation Process.  There is no limit on the number of transferable credit hours beyond that imposed on all degrees by LSA.

Currently Enrolled UM Students

Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) website to see if the class has already been approved for transfer.

  • If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as equivalent credit (i.e. Chem 130) then no additional steps are required.
  • If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as departmental credit (i.e. Chem Dept.) then the course has been reviewed and was not found to be an exact equivalent to any of our courses at UM. These classes will not count toward the requirements for the major or minor within the Chemistry department but will count toward the LSA natural science area distribution requirement.
  • If the class is not listed on the TCE website, then we have not reviewed the course.

In order to request evaluation or re-evaluation for any Chemistry course(s), the external institution's course instructor and/or department teaching or offering the course(s) will need to send:

  • a detailed sample syllabus
  • copies of exams & quizzes
  • laboratory experiments (when applicable)

The material should be submitted to the Department of Chemistry for review at chemundergrad@umich.edu .
