About
Hi there! My name is Sage Paris; I'm a junior studying Environmental Engineering. I'm specifically looking to learn more about Environmental Fluid Dynamics and graduate in May 2022. Beyond my undergrad, I'm very interested in pursuing a graduate degree in Environmental Engineering and/or interdisciplinary Aquatic Sciences. My hobbies include running, gardening, and practicing Spanish. I grew up around a lot of accessible natural areas in county parks here in Michigan. My fun fact is that I was actually named after a lake (Sage Lake)! Naturally—if I say so myself—I have gained a great appreciation for environmental sciences, but I love all kinds of science. A professional goal of mine is to bring my technical knowledge in Engineering to the fields of Natural Resource management and Conservation. Especially with ongoing climate change, I envision myself investigating changes to both our built and natural environments that researchers should measure, model, and mitigate. Talk to me about anything to do with water!
Previously, my extracurriculars have been the Michigan Community Scholars Program (the residential program themed on social justice), Chi Epsilon (the CEE Honor Society), and my lab from UROP. I am so grateful that I got to participate in UROP. Like many of my classmates, I was certainly interested in seeing what research at the University really looked like but I needed some structured guidance to get to the next step. My UROP seminar ultimately pushed me to develop my skills and confidence to get my foot in the door of a research lab. Not to mention, I was amazed by my classmates who also worked on fascinating projects; I really want my students to become friends like I experienced in my seminar!
Although we will be conducting our seminars remotely (and students will operate mostly remote in all other classes) I want to encourage everyone to still stay optimistic! I personally advocate that one's attitude can really help or hinder any opportunities that arise, and this will be key to keep in mind in the coming year. It might be quite different of a feeling now, but getting to know your classmates and instructors is one of the best parts of college. Let's rise to the occasion!
