About
Although I am a BCN major, I decided to take on a project within the Film, Television, and Media department in the 2022–23 academic year. Despite not having much prior knowledge of the work required of me, this proved to be a wonderful experience in which I expanded my interests and worked with a wonderful mentor. Through my time as a UROP student, I was able to make long-lasting connections. At first, I had considered accepting a psychology-focused project, but I found that I could contribute most with a mentor I could easily talk to who encouraged me to try new things. My project involved looking into the first phenomenon of "fake news" in the U.S. through a well-known historic radio broadcast known as "The War of the Worlds" back in the 1930's. I enjoyed taking on the challenge of historical research, delving through records held in U-M's archives, and proudly presenting information that can be used by history teachers in the future. From my time on this project, I learned how to organize metadata, and realized how valuable it is to have a mentor encouraging my academic progress while educating myself about things outside my field of study.
