Same Service, New Location
LSA Technology Services has several walk-in Service Centers on campus that serve both as a working location for several LSA Technology Services teams and as a space where LSA faculty, staff, and students can receive computer support and check out technology loan equipment. In August, our G340 Mason Hall Service Center moved after several years to G155 Angell Hall. The new location is just around the corner from the previous one and it offers several advantages.
Benefits and Challenges of Moving
One main benefit of the G155 Angell Hall walk-in center is its location at a bustling intersection of hallways near the Fishbowl. Close to many classrooms, the new walk-in center receives more foot traffic than the old location, creating more opportunities to assist customers. The G155 Angell Hall space also offers a more effective way of storing technology loan equipment than the old space. Jaron Fox, Technology Service Center Supervisor, who was directly involved in the move, said, “Our goal was to have a center in the same general location, with supervisors closer to the location, and an equipment room that could be locked independently of the center. Having an independent space dedicated to loan equipment storage is a huge plus.”
Such a move presented design challenges, of course: A new space would need an effective layout for employee workstations, space for working with patrons, and space for a large amount of loan equipment. Fox shared, however, that G155 Angell Hall had been a working location for LSA Technology Services staff years ago prior to the move to Mason. “As such, it wasn’t as challenging as some of the other spaces from a design perspective. Our primary design concerns were ensuring that patrons had enough space in the location and that staff didn’t feel crowded at their workstations. I feel that the layout of the space is much more welcoming to patrons and gives us better space to assist.”
At Home in the New Space
Fox also shared, “From a personal perspective, it’s really nice to be back in this space and to see so many people working out of it. Before the pandemic, I worked [here], and it was a bustling office filled with the smell of coffee and the sounds of conversations so it’s very nice to be back again.”
Dush Fernando, Director of Support Services, shared that this is the last of our four service centers to be renovated, bringing us one step closer to delivering delightful technology services to our LSA community. He said, “I am grateful to the many Support Services team members who partnered with Susan Monroe and Linda Mason from LSA Facilities to design and bring this beautiful space to life. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this milestone possible!”
LSA Technology Services is excited to support the LSA community at our new location. The team is looking forward to providing a delightful technology experience to help faculty, staff, and students succeed in their classroom and professional work. Come visit us in G155 Angell Hall today!
