Residential Field

Residential Field Courses

Field courses include individual and/or small group research work, and a range of settings for discussion and debate on questions and ideas relating to the environment.

Five semester long programs are offered at University-owned field stations. Taking a course at any of the following five field stations automatically meets PitE's practical experience requirement. No further approval is required from PitE advisors, but students must apply for admission directly through the field programs.

  1. The University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) in northern lower Michigan offers various ecological and evolutionary science and humanities courses during the spring and summer terms, including the PitE core requirement of ENV/EEB 381, General Ecology, which is offered during spring and summer terms.
  2. The Camp Davis Field Station in Jackson Hole, Wyoming offers geology, environmental science and humanities courses during the summer term, including PitE pre-requisites Geology 116: Geology in the Rockies, and Environ/Earth 202: Introductory Environmental Science in the Rockies. Offered during spring and summer terms. Environ/Earth 450, Ecosystem Science in the Rockies, meets the general ecology requirement of the Environment major.
  3. The New England Literature Program (NELP), offering several courses at its Maine location.
  4. The Michigan in Washington Program, in the Nation's capital provides both classroom courses and an internship. Offered during fall and winter terms.
  5. The Semester in Detroit program offers courses related to environmental justice, which are taught by both U-M and Wayne State University faculty. Students also complete an internship in the city. Offered during winter and spring terms.

Note: All courses at these locations fulfill not only the PitE practical experience requirement, but may also meet other requirements in the PitE concentration and minor, such as prerequisites, core courses, and specialization courses. PitE advisors can help you plan to make the most out of your elections at a field station.
