Research

Jewish studies is a vast field, spanning geographic locations and historical periods. It encompasses the religious practices, histories, and cultures of Jewish communities across the Middle East, Africa, the Mediterranean, Europe, South Asia, and the Americas. We study Jewish societies and cultures through the disciplinary lenses of history, literature, media, linguistics, religion, political thought, philosophy, anthropology, and sociology.

The inherent diversity of Judaic studies is reflected in the reach and ambition of our unit. Our faculty pursues a capacious understanding of the field that centers new perspectives and underrepresented groups. The Frankel Center seeks to collaborate with units across campus and take full advantage of the University of Michigan’s exceptional libraries and archives to promote cutting-edge research that diversifies the field and addresses its historical gaps.
