Students should begin by familiarizing themselves with the transfer process as detailed by the LSA Newnan Advising Center. In order for transfer credits to count toward a Judaic Studies major or minor, it must first be approved for transfer credit by the University and appear on the transcript as transfer credit. Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) website to see if the class has already been approved for transfer. If the class is not listed on the TCE website, submit an evaluation request using the UM Transfer Credit Equivalency Request Form. Whenever possible, students should consult with the Judaic Studies Advisor in advance of taking a course elsewhere to determine whether the course will count towards the major or minor.
The course level (200, 300, 400) and number of credits earned is determined by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, not by the Judaic Studies Program. When transfer credits are accepted by the Credit Evaluators, they might appear as a Departmental Credits such as Judaic 201X. This does not guarantee it can count for Judaic Studies credit. Most classes will not transfer with a Judaic listing but instead with another department (History 201X, English 301X, MES 401X etc.), or Interdepartmental Credit (INTERSS 201X), or Study Abroad (STDABRD XXX). These classes may still be able to count toward a Judaic Studies degree.
If a student wants to use transfer credits towards their Judaic Studies degree, they need to be evaluated by the Judaic Studies Program. Use the Judaic Studies Transfer Credit Evaluation Form to submit a course description and detailed syllabus of the course you wish to have reviewed. The detailed syllabus should include the instructor’s name, term the class was offered, textbooks or reading list (if any), basis of grading (exams, quizzes, papers, etc.), a class by class schedule of topics covered during the course. The submission will be reviewed by the Judaic Studies Curriculum Committee to determine if the class can count toward a Judaic Studies degree. The Student Services Coordinator (SSC) will e-mail the student with the Curriculum Committee’s decision. If approved, an exception will be submitted by the SSC for the credit to count toward a Judaic Studies degree.
