From Medieval England to West Africa and Back: the Many Lives of the Asante Ewer

Presented by Lloyd de Beer, The British Museum, Britain, Europe and Prehistory, Curator of Collections
Monday, April 13, 2026
2:30-4:00 PM
Room 60 Tappan Hall Map
This workshop focuses on the story of a medieval jug. Produced in England in the second half of the fourteenth century, it was photographed in 1884 in the courtyard of the Asantehene's (king) palace in Kumasi, modern-day Ghana. The jug was looted by the British military in 1896 and brought back to England, where it was acquired by the British Museum. How did this European-made object end up in the courtyard of an African king's palace? What was its status and significance in West Africa? And how does studying it today, shed light on the complex status of African objects in Western museums.
