Postdoctoral Research Fellow
About
Stephen Cassidy Jones is a postdoctoral Research Fellow for the Carceral State Project.
In 2024, Stephen completed his PhD in Earth & Environmental Sciences (Geography) at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. His dissertation project examined the geographies of counterinsurgency in California's super-maximum-security prisons, developed in the aftermath of militant organizing by people in prison in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
As part of his dissertation research project, Stephen co-founded the Prison Law Archive at the Southern California Library in Los Angeles. The PLA is a new archive which documents the emergence and proliferation of the Security Housing Unit in California prisons and opposition to it.
In addition to his work for the Carceral State Project, Stephen is co-authoring a peer-reviewed article about jail expansion and the criminalization of poverty in Tennessee. He is also working on a book manuscript about anti-prison organizing in California during the 1990s and 2000s by people imprisoned in California's new SHUs and organizations beyond prison walls.
