About
Earl Lewis is the Thomas C. Holt Distinguished University Professor of History, Afroamerican and African Studies, and Public Policy at the University of Michigan. The founding director of the U-M Center for Social Solutions, Lewis previously served as president of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (2013–2018), provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Emory University (2004–2012), and dean of The Horace H Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan(1998-2004). An author and esteemed social historian, he is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the recipient of 11 honorary degrees, and a past president of the Organization of American Historians.
