Saarah traveled to Narayana Healthcare Hospital in Bangalore to investigate the burden of healthcare on poverty. She researched what it meant to have access to healthcare for rural and urban Indians that fall below the poverty line.
Bailey Binke, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology/French
Bailey spent five weeks in Karnataka working with other students at the Indian Institute of Science in the Ecology Department studying elephant-human interactions through crop raiding.
David Buruchara, Finance/International Studies
David worked with Sammaan Foundation in Patna, Bihar. Sammaan helps empower the downtrodden, create income opportunities for the unskilled and inspire their social inclusion. The foundation fosters entrepreneurship skills in rickshaw pullers. David examined how these entrepreneurship skills foster socio-economic inclusion and dignity for these marginalized workers.
Courtney Green, Ford School of Public Policy
Courtney spent seven weeks in Mumbai working for Pratham, a child education NGO, and conducted her own research on women’s safety. Courtney conducted a survey on how safe women felt traveling alone during the day and at night, what they felt should be done to make the city safer, and what they felt they could do as an individual to make the city safer.
Dustin Hartz, Physics/Biopsychology, Cognition & Neuroscience
Dustin investigated the relationships between Vedata and modern physics in India, with a focus on applications toward cognitive research. Dustin conducted interviews, gathering data and resources, and developed experiments to be carried out in the future using the supposition of monism and Vedantic theory as an inquisitional basis.
Magdalene Kuznia, Nursing
Magdalene worked with Jayaa Singh, a U-M alumna who founded the Salokaya College of Nursing in New Delhi. Magdalene visited different HIV/AIDS treatment centers, and analyzed the resources available to the large population of Delhi. She taught a class to the incoming freshmen about the value of nursing, and presented to the staff about what she found from her HIV/AIDS treatment center visits.
