After a successful first year, the CSAS South Asian Film Series is focused on female directors for the 2024-25 season.
This year's series kicked off in September 2024 with Girls Will Be Girls by director Shuchi Talati.
"This past year was a big one for South Asian women on the film festival circuit," said Veerandra Prasad, curator of the film series and screenwriter, director, and lecturer at U-M. "We have a schedule filled with award winners."
"Girls Will Be Girls won an Audience Award at Sundance. All We Imagine as Light won the Grand Prix at Cannes. It felt natural to do a showcase centered on these prominent films."
The fall schedule also includes Mississippi Masala by director Mira Nair in October and 2024 documentary Nocturnes by Anirban Dutta and Anupama Srinivasan in November.
"Mira Nair recently tracked down all of the assets she needed to do a restoration of her trail-blazing diaspora film Mississippi Masala," added Prasad. "And because she’s arguably the most famous South Asian woman working in film, it was an easy decision to make that our first retrospective screening.
"Nocturnes is a film that I wanted to make sure was seen on a big screen. It is so visually stunning and the kind of meditative movie you’ll want to see in a darkened theater."
CSAS will again partner with the historical Michigan Theater to showcase the South Asian film series, with all films being shown at either the Michigan Theater or the State Theater. All screenings are free and open to the public.
The series will run monthly through March 2025 and all screenings are free and open to the public. Please continue to check the CSAS website for more information.
