The Michigan Institute for Research in Astrophysics (MIRA) was launched in 2014 to help U-M play a greater role in pushing the frontiers of astrophysics. MIRA serves as a forum for harnessing the astrophysical expertise across campus and providing leadership where Michigan has particular strengths, such as star- and planet-formation, cosmology and galaxy clusters, high-energy astrophysics, instrumentation, or magnetohydrodynamics.
Through workshops, conferences, and cutting-edge research campaigns, MIRA aims to focus a critical mass of thinkers here and at our peer institutions on these issues, and to exploit the synergies made possible by diverse perspectives and skill sets.
MIRA draws its faculty participation and leadership largely from its founding departments: Astronomy; Physics; and Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences, though participation by relevant researchers across campus is welcome.
