About
Sarah Lime is a doctoral candidate in Germanic Languages and Literatures and a certificate student in Women’s and Gender Studies. Her dissertation examines representations of dolls and doll-like figures in early twentieth century German media, with particular attention to the doll as a modernist medium embraced and reimagined by women artists. By subverting the social functions and aesthetic norms of the “traditional” doll, these doll-artists reveal its critical and emancipatory potential––as a site for self-reflection and a vehicle for asserting creative autonomy. More broadly, Sarah sees the doll as an exciting surface upon which her interests in gender, sexuality, and the body converge.
