Lilia Cortina

Lilia Cortina, Chair and University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor of Psychology, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Management & Organizations, has published an op-ed in the Detroit Free Press. Her article, DEI is secret sauce of University of Michigan’s success, details the various DEI initiatives at Michigan that make a “superior educational experience.”

This brilliant defense of what has made Michigan an exemplary institution received an outpouring of community support.

The article calls for the University to continue its faculty DEI initiatives like the University Diversity and Social Transformation Professorship because “diverse, talented professors bring a range of perspectives and pedagogical techniques to the classroom.”

Professor Cortina calls out the diverse and excellent faculty accomplishments: “They conduct revolutionary research. Earn accolades and “genius” grants. Win Pulitzer Prizes. Put the institution’s name on pioneering innovations, patented discoveries, and landmark reports (like this one and this one).”

The article invites readers to look to University Diversity and Social Transformation Professors to find interdisciplinary experts and internationally acclaimed scholars that continue to advocate for DEI (many of whom have connections to Women's and Gender Studies).

Congratulations, and thank you, Professor Cortina. See the full article here.
