Plan ahead to finish ahead!
The first or second year of study is the perfect time to make plans to get the most out of your major. If you are interested in Sociology but not sure you want to declare the major, consider taking one of our introductory courses (SOC 100 or SOC 102 for first and second year students). These courses fulfill the prerequisite to declare the Sociology major. Courses at the 200-level are also an excellent place to learn more about sociology as a discipline and determine if the major is for you. Schedule an advising appointment to talk through the major, sub-major options, requirements, and department opportunities.
After you've declared, reflect on what you'd like to do during the remaining two or three years of your undergraduate career. How does sociology fit into your academic and career plans? Consider experiential learning opportunities like Project Community (SOC 225) and SURO (SOC 394). If you are a first-generation college student, check out SOUL. Review SOC course options on the LSA Course Catelog and select courses in which you are genuinely interested. Take a risk on a class that unexpectedly piques your interest!
Don't forget about the three required courses. Fit in the required statistics course (SOC 210 or STATS 250) early – preferably in your sophomore year. Make sure you leave room to take SOC 305 (Theory) and SOC 310 (Methods) in your junior year – preferably not in the same term.
If you want to add a level of rigor to your studies, start investigating the Senior Thesis + Honors Program in Sociology and plan on applying in the first semester of your junior year.
