What is your advising philosophy? My advising philosophy involves a deep connection with relationship-building and promoting the advising space as an individualized learning experience. Arriving at the University of Michigan College of LSA is an exciting and life-changing experience. I believe my role as an Academic Advisor is to promote a sense of curiosity for our students, helping them understand their goals and dreams from their academic decision-making. At the same time, I want to ensure our students have a deep connection to their communities and a sense of belonging on campus to ensure their success and persistence with their challenging academics. I see myself as a “cultural navigator” within a new or evolving academic, professional, and social community. My role is to be a person that our students can always lean on, talk to, feel supported, and encouraged by during their academic and personal journey here at Michigan.
What was your path to Newnan? I am a “Double Wolverine '' where I completed both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Michigan College of LSA and School of Education. During my undergraduate degree, I double majored in History and American Culture. I moved around several different career and pre-professional routes including business, pre-health, and public policy, but I was always attracted back to what community and social change could be accomplished through education! History and American Culture were so diverse and thought-provoking, I loved being able to have conversations about topics ranging from the History of Childhood, to the Cultural Study of APIA Women, to even writing research papers about the French Riviera. I saw my studies as a way to branch out my own knowledge but also to appreciate the human condition and value peoples’ stories. Culminating my undergraduate education, I knew I wanted to be in education, and I found a love for Higher Education by working as an Academic Peer Advisor (APA) actually in the Newnan Academic Advising Center, along with other on-campus community-building opportunities including with University Housing. This led me to pursue my Master’s in Higher Education where I continued to dive deeper into experiences of academic advising, undergraduate admissions, and graduate residence education.
Why did you join Newnan? I joined the Newnan Academic Advising Center because of the positive and enlightening experience I had within this learning space as an undergraduate student with my general academic advisor. In addition, as an Academic Peer Advisor in Newnan for two Summer Orientation sessions, I fell in love with the higher education profession, community development, and what could be accomplished with a thoughtful conversation about a students’ life and academics. I found this space would allow me to be a guiding light for students in a large and sometimes overwhelming campus community. Of course, largest of all, I am here to support and promote a sense of belonging for our liberal arts students. As a former College of LSA student who has experienced the excitements and challenges of being a Michigan student, I knew I was in the right place to encourage students with whom I have a deep personal connection. Who would not want to have conversations with some of the brightest minds every day?
Class you loved and why? History 328 Topics: Modern Scottish Culture - My concentrations in the History major were U.S. and British histories and I took Modern Scottish Culture as a fun class in the last semester of my undergraduate education. Due to studying abroad in the UK in the past year, and falling in love with Edinburgh, Scotland, I could not resist this course. This is an exemplary class that shows the sheer diversity of course offerings that LSA has to offer. I loved being able to watch classic and modern Scottish films, reading Scottish literature, and examining art pieces too! The class was also only 7 students, so the discussions were some of the most in-depth and close-knit I ever had in a college course!
Interests and hobbies Running Long Distances, Reading one of my 1000+ Books, Exploring Ann Arbor Restaurants and Coffee Shops, Watching any British TV, Camping or Hiking in Northern Michigan
