How do you approach supporting students?

I take a holistic and individualized approach to advising -- students have full, complex, important lives that include (but don't always center on) the classroom. I listen deeply, ask questions, and think through possibilities with students. My ultimate goal is for students to be successful -- however they define success for themselves. I aim to journey alongside students as they design and navigate their college experience in alignment with their definition of success. Ultimately, students are the experts in their own lives and goals, and I can offer additional information and perspective.

What's one experience outside the classroom that shaped who you are today?

My work-study job was in the Office of the Dean of Students. Initially, I filed paperwork and answered phones. Increasingly, they asked me to take on special projects. I ran orientation the summer before my senior year and then transitioned into supporting a pilot advising program. Over my four years in the Dean of Students, I gained mentors and champions, confidence in my skills, and ultimately my career path.

What's something you struggled with as a student, and what helped you in that situation?

I struggled with managing unstructured time throughout college. I wanted to be prepared for class, hangout with my friends, work, go to my clubs, relax -- and it didn't all fit. My advisor helped me work through my schedule (a weekly schedule and backwards planning for assignments). She reminded me that I would likely need to study at least one of the weekend days. Looking back, I wish I had told my advisor and mentors how hard I was working to tread water. I am grateful for the support I did have, and I would have benefited from even more support for executive functioning.

Where did you grow up? What are some fun facts that others may not know about where you grew up?

I grew up in southern Maine, which means I have a deep love for ice cream stands, seafood, beach walks, and LL Bean.
