Ancient Studies

Historians in the department who work on antiquity (broadly understood to be any area before ca. 700 C.E.) are dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of worlds across the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Religion, imperialism, material culture, gender, sexuality, science, medicine, and law are areas of particular interest. Faculty and graduate students participate in a variety of interdisciplinary fora including the Premodern Colloquium, the Medieval and Early Modern Studies Program (MEMS), and the new Classical Intersectionalities Reading Group. Together with Classics, History is one of the two departments behind the Interdepartmental Program in Ancient History (IPAH), which offers a graduate certificate in Ancient History, as well as housing a doctoral program of its own. People in the ancient history cluster are committed to an interdisciplinary perspective that reaches out towards various fields and methods. Our faculty’s intellectual commitment to cross-disciplinary collaboration is realized in our participation in a number of departments and programs beyond history including IPAH, Classics, Middle East Studies, Judaic Studies, Anthro-History, IRWG, STS, and Archaeology.
