About
Tuğçe received her B.A. in History with high honors from Boğaziçi University in 2018, followed by her M.A. from the same institution in 2021. Her master’s thesis focused on the interactions of social groups in fourth-century Athens.
She is a Ph.D. candidate in the Interdepartmental Program in Ancient History and is currently enrolled in the Women’s and Gender Studies certificate program. She is a social historian specializing in classical and early Hellenistic Greece, with research interests in gender, economy, and slavery. Her work focuses on marginalized groups and degrees of marginality, particularly in relation to state formation and imperial structures. Akgül explores questions such as: How were socio-economic systems in Greek society sustained at the expense of certain populations? How were identities and socially accepted/internalized emotions, practices, and forms of knowledge constructed to ensure continuity? She aims to answer these questions by incorporating different aspects of social reproduction and care.
