As an instructor, I most enjoy helping students to discover previously unrecognized abilities to speak and act through their writing, and seeing that ability serve them in their academic and professional work.

...clear scaffolding with frequent reinforcement of key concepts, plenty of group work and opportunities to share their opinions in class, and my sincere effort to avoid assigning “busywork.” I take a practical approach to writing instruction. For me, this means showing students the real-world benefits of writing and providing consistent information about *why* each course element exists. I also offer frequent and in-depth office hours.

...avoid the trap of starting off by trying too hard to prove what you already know. Instead, focus on the new material you need to absorb at this level.

...that U-M students should enjoy cheap or free access to the many quality concerts, stage shows, databases, visiting speakers, museums, and other perks for students here. One is very unlikely to have access of that kind again!
