Virtual Orientation Course & Online Placement Exams
Please check your U-M email inbox for emails from the Office of New Student Programs and the Comprehensive Studies Program. These emails will be sent out mid-late April. If you do not receive an this email after 7 business days of submitting your enrollment deposit or receiving a waiver, please email onsp@umich.edu.
We have included the 5 Steps to Success to ensure you are prepared for your orientation appointment. You should also receive this via email.
Step 1: Introduce Yourself (Required)
By completing our required Scholar Snapshot, you are sharing important information that will allow a CSP academic advisor to prepare to partner with you on your success and solidify a class schedule that is in line with your academic, professional, and personal goals. This snapshot should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete. To complete the Scholar Snapshot, please click here.
Step 2: Explore Coursework and Pick Your Six (Required)
Whether you have already selected a major of interest or are undecided, exploring degree requirements and course options will be key to a successful Advising and Registration session. To be fully prepared for your session, you must backpack six course options that you would like to consider for the Fall semester. The links below will help you with understanding requirements and exploring coursework of interest:

The links below will explain the Pick Your Six exercise and provide options for placing courses of interest in your backpack. The backpack is similar to the “cart” when shopping online. It identifies courses that you are interested in, but does not actually register you for the course. You will complete the registration step with your advisor on your advising and registration date.
We acknowledge that this is a lot of information to work through. If you are having difficulty with any of the information listed in step 2, we strongly encourage you to attend one of the Drop-In sessions highlighted in Step 4 below.
Step 3: Complete Your Placement Tests (Required)
Completing all required placement exams (Writing, Math, Chemistry, and Language) is a crucial part of identifying courses that align with your goals. You can use this link to complete all of your required placement exams.
Step 4: Attend a Drop-In Session (Optional)
To further assist you in this pre-orientation period, CSP is hosting a series of drop-in sessions that will be facilitated by our Academic Peer Advisors (APAs) who are current CSP scholars here at U-M and they are ready to assist with any portion of steps 1-3. These sessions will take place over Zoom and are offered on the following dates:
Wednesday, May 29th, 4-6pm
Thursday, May 30th 4-6pm
Wednesday, June 5th 4-6pm
Monday, June 10th 4-6pm
You may sign up to attend any of the above by clicking on the session link and completing the RSVP process. You will then receive an invite to attend in your UMICH Google Calendar.
Step 5: Secure access to a laptop or desktop for your Advising and Registration Date (Strongly Recommended)
Attending your Advising and Registration Date on Zoom via laptop or desktop will lead to the best experience. We discourage the use of tablets and mobile devices as they can sometimes present challenges while navigating U-M tools and systems that are crucial to the success of your session. Prior to your advising and registrations session, make sure that your Zoom settings will allow you to share your screen, as we will be walking through the process to register for classes. If you are a Mac user, pay special attention to macOS permissions/settings for Zoom screen sharing. The screen sharing function requires the desktop client, and is not currently present in the web/browser.
