"From the moment I submitted my application to Michigan, I knew that if I came here, I wanted to major in international studies. While other institutions I was considering offered degrees in political science, sociology, and government, I wanted access to a broader international education, which I found in PICS. It created the perfect intersection of courses where I could study national and international security (my concentration), China and broader East Asia (my regional focus), and the role of human rights in the global system.
What I didn't expect to find within PICS was the sense of community it created. By being a smaller major department, I was able to form a tight bond not only with the professors but also with the advisors and my classmates. From my membership in Sigma Iota Rho (the international studies honor society), to always meeting with the same advisor, and getting to know professors over multiple classes, I never felt alone in my major. I knew that I could get help and advice if needed.
PICS is not just a college major or department, it's a family. And as I move beyond Michigan and into my career, I'm proud to be a PICS alumnus."
