Dear Dear Valued Alumni and Friends of PICS,
Greetings from Ann Arbor! The fall semester is in full swing, and campus is buzzing with energy from excited students, faculty, and staff. I’m reaching out with an important ask.
At the Program in International and Comparative Studies (PICS), we know that students learn best when they go beyond borders—immersing themselves in new cultures, perspectives, and communities. That’s why we’re launching the Learning that Transcends Borders Initiative, a new requirement ensuring every International Studies major completes a Global and Intercultural Experience (GIE).
These experiences change lives. They build language skills, cultural competency, adaptability, and confidence. Many of you may remember how study abroad, internships, or research opportunities shaped your own journey—or perhaps you wished you’d had the chance to go. We want to make sure every PICS student has that opportunity, here or abroad.
With recent federal funding cuts impacting many of our International Institute programs, your support is more critical than ever. And right now, you can double your impact.
Through the University of Michigan’s Monthly Gift Matching Program (July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026), the first $100 of every new monthly gift will be matched one-to-one for 12 months. That means your ongoing support will go twice as far—funding scholarships, emergency travel aid, and hands-on intercultural programs. You are welcome to visit our FAQ document about this program here to learn more about how your gifts are counted.
Together, we can ensure that every PICS student graduates prepared to thrive in our interconnected world.
Please join us in making this vision a reality.
With gratitude,
Melanie Tanielian
