PICS Summer Research and Internship Grants
All travel must follow current guidelines, which are detailed in the International Institute Travel Policy.

The Program in International and Comparative Studies (PICS) encourages students with PICS declared majors or minors to pursue international opportunities. This funding opportunity supports students planning to do internships or conduct research abroad during the spring and/or summer semesters.
Students are asked to indicate at least one of the following areas of interest/study:
- human rights
- international development
- international security and cooperation
- global health
- global environment
- comparative culture and identity

Eligibility
- Open to all students with declared PICS majors and minors, regardless of citizenship.
- Projects must be at least 30 days and take place between May 1-August 31.
- Students must be enrolled at U-M for at least one term after this project and cannot graduate prior to the research or travel opportunity.
- Applicants for research grants may be at the preliminary or more advanced stages of their research. Joining an existing research project is recommended.
- Applicants for internship grants should be prepared to identify the venue for their internship in a governmental agency, business, or non-governmental organization abroad with documentation of the internship.
Award Amounts
Award amounts vary and can be up to $5,000. Funding can be used for air travel, local transportation, room and board, research expenses, fees for educational opportunities, and visa fees.
Requirements
- Students must register their travel, receive LSA Travel approval, and follow LSA International Travel Guidelines. NOTE: Undergraduate students are not permitted to travel to countries with travel restrictions.
- Complete a final report and answer questions about the impact of the study abroad experience, which is due within one month of returning from the study abroad program by September 15.
Selection Process
A selection committee comprised of PICS-affiliated faculty and instructors will evaluate applications on the following criteria: feasibility, relevance to degree program, relevance to career goals, record of academic achievement, and overall quality of the application.
