2018 NEKST | Call for Papers

6th International Conference of NextGen Korean Studies Scholars (NEKST)

May 11-12, 2018 | Ann Arbor, MI

We invite graduate students within Korean studies across the humanities and social sciences to participate in the 6th International Conference of NextGen Korean Studies Scholars (NEKST) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  NEKST gives graduate students in all academic fields an opportunity to present their research on Korea, share academic interests, and build a community of future Korean studies scholars.  Applicants from all disciplines are welcome, as long as the topic is related to Korea.

The two-day conference will feature traditional paper presentations, workshop sessions for dissertation chapters and articles, as well as professionalization workshops.  We will deepen our interdisciplinary discussion by hosting prominent Korean studies scholars as Faculty Mentors to promote collaboration and discussion.

Current graduate students (MA or PhD) as well as those holding terminal MA’s from universities in any country are eligible to apply.  The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2018.  Please submit a 250-word abstract via our online application form.  There are two formats available:

1. Paper presentation:

For all current graduate students who seek to share their research in an oral presentation with commentary from a faculty member.  If accepted, completed papers will be due by April 27.

2. Chapter or article:

For advanced graduate students who would like feedback on dissertation chapters or pre-submission journal articles from Korean specialists. Faculty Mentors and participants in the conference will join for intensive discussion on pre-circulated manuscripts of a single chapter.  If accepted, completed papers will be due by April 13.

Lodging and on-site meals will be provided during the conference.  Travel grants will be available upon application for accepted participants.

For further information, please contact and check back on this page for updates on the conference.

THE 6TH NEKST Conference is sponsored by the Nam Center for Korean Studies at the University of Michigan with support from the Academy of Korean Studies.  The conference organizing committee is composed of doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences at the University of Michigan.
