About
Mike Hawkins is a historical and political geographer with a research focus on the Philippines. His research examines the histories of American empire in the Philippines, the geopolitics of decolonization in Southeast Asia, and the urban geographies of labor in Manila. He is working on a book—based on his dissertation—that examines the spaces and politics of labor at the Port of Manila during a series of historical episodes stretching from the early American era to the present.
In the International Institute, Mike teaches classes for both the Program in International & Comparative Studies (PICS) and the Masters in International and Regional Studies (MIRS). He has also taught courses for the Program in the Environment, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and Department of Asian Languages and Cultures.
