About
Professor Wells is a theoretical physicist whose research focuses on high energy physics and the science and technology of global security. A key area of interest is scientific and security cooperation with Europe. His professional experience related to Europe includes:
- Staff member for 6 years at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, which is a European lab of particle physics, that required collaboration and planning across Europe to develop future projects.
- Consultant to Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (2017-18), one of Europe's largest scientific labs based in Hamburg, Germany, in connection to its obtaining Germany's large "excellence grant" award.
- Member and subsequent Chair of the Panel on Public Affairs (POPA) of the American Physical Society (APS) from 2014-2020, where he worked on global security studies and issued official statements and reports from the APS on secure treaty verification, nuclear arms control, non-proliferation, and missile defense systems, all of which involve direct cooperation, consultation or negotiation with European countries.
- Invited collaborator at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where he will work on global security issues of joint interest between Europe and the United States, including in the area of "integrated deterrence" that is of particular interest to NATO and European allies (2022-23).
