Undergraduate Study Abroad Scholarship

All travel must follow current guidelines, which are detailed in the International Institute Travel Policy.

The Center for Japanese Studies provides a limited number of scholarships for undergraduate students who will participate in a study abroad academic program in Japan, as well as eligible language programs offered in the United States.  Approximately five to seven scholarships are awarded on a merit-basis in an annual competition each spring.

Important Note: It is the responsibility of the student to find the appropriate study abroad program and to complete the necessary application process to enroll in the program.  For assistance in finding the appropriate program, see the Study in Japan and Summer Language Programs sections of the CJS web site, see a study abroad advisor in your school/college (e.g., Center for Global and Intercultural StudyInternational Programs in EngineeringRoss Global Initiatives), or visit the International Center Education Abroad Office.

CJS is currently accepting applications for students who will be participating in study abroad programs to Japan that take place in the following time periods: 1) Spring-Summer 2026, including Global Course Connections (GCC) courses that travel to Japan in May 2026; 2) Fall 2026 semester; and 3) full Academic Year 2026-27 (fall and winter terms). Application deadline is March 1, 2026. Applications for students participating in study abroad programs during Winter 2027 will be available in Fall 2026.
