About
Amy Kuʻuleialoha Stilman is a Professor of American Culture and Music (Musicology), and is a core faculty member of A/PIA, an ethnic studies program housed within the Department of American Culture. A historical musicologist by training and an ethnomusicologist by practice, Stillmanʻs research focuses on historical perspectives on indigenous performance in Polynesia, especially Hawaiʻi and Tahiti. She is the author of Sacred Hula: The Historical Hula ʻAlaʻapapa (Bishop Museum Press, 1998), as well as numerous articles in leading journals such as Ethnomusicology, Journal of American Folklore, Journal of Asian American Studies, Hawaiian Journal of History, and Yearbook for Traditional Music. In her role as Facilitator in the non-profit organization Kūlia i Ka Pūnāwai (Kumu Hula Association of Southern California), Stillman has co-curated four themed mass concerts using repertoire uncovered in her research and co-produced four studio recordings: Kalākaua (concert 2004, CD 2006),Kapiʻolani (concert 2006, CD 2007), Liliʻuokalani (2010), and Kaulana Nā Pua (2015). She teamed up with artists Daniel Ho and Tia Carrere as co-producer and lyricist on three Hawaiian CDs:, the GRAMMY-winning ʻIkena (2008), the GRAMMY-nominated He Nani (2009), and the GRAMMY-winning Huana Ke Aloha (2010).
