Request Event Funding

Faculty & Departments
The Department of American Culture co-sponsors guest lectures, conferences, and other scholarly activities that contribute to the academic and research mission of the department and LSA. Preference will be given to events that demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary focus.

Graduate Students/Interest Groups
The Department provides direct funding to RIWs affiliated with/administered by American Culture. RIWs outside of AC may request co-sponsorship of guest lectures and other scholarly activities that contribute to the academic and research mission of the department and LSA. We usually limit this funding to one time per year.  Events proposed by students outside of the department must be open to American Culture graduate student participation.

Undergraduate Student Groups
The Department will co-sponsor guest lectures and provide funding for events and activities that have a scholarly component and contribute to the academic and research mission of the department and LSA. American Culture does not provide funding for charity, cultural or social events, or conference/research travel for individual students.

Arab and Muslim American Studies co-sponsors guest lectures, conferences, performances, and other scholarly activities relevant to advancing the understanding of Arab and Muslim communities and cultural politics in the U.S. and transnationally.

Arab and Muslim American Studies is rarely able to provide more than $100-$200 in co-sponsorships.

The Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies program is pleased to co-sponsor lectures, exhibits, performances, and symposia that promote awareness of the history and/or culture of Asian and Pacific Islander communities in the United States. Typically, A/PIA Studies can provide funding between $100-500 depending on budget considerations and relevance to the program.  Projects that are initiated by A/PIA Studies faculty and students, and projects closely tied to A/PIA Studies scholarship have priority.  

For cultural events that are led by student organizations, we ask that the A/PIA Studies program is advertised in any promotional materials (program booklet, poster, website) in consultation with the current A/PIA director.  In addition, events must include an educational component and contribute to the academic and research mission of the unit. 

Co-sponsorship requests from A/PIA Studies should be submitted at least 6 weeks before the event to provide enough time for faculty vote. 

The Latina/o Studies program endorses and celebrates collaboration with units and groups at the University of Michigan. Our goal is to support as many events as financially possible. Unfortunately, as a program housed in American Culture, Latina/o Studies has a limited budget with which it supports the unit’s own events as a whole as well as those organized by our core faculty.

The list below provides a guide for the amount of funds Latina/o Studies can devote to sponsoring events. Features that might influence levels of support include membership of the Latina/o Studies affiliate faculty, graduate and undergraduate students’ affiliation with the program, and our sense of debt and reciprocity with units that have been our good partners.

1- $100.00-limited thematic relationship with the program/limited faculty-student interest

2- $150.00/200.00-medium level program support

3- $300.00/$500.00 high level program support

4- $750.00-major program event/initiative

*** The amount assigned to each initiative might vary based on the amount requested from other ethnic units within American Culture and/or American Culture as a whole.

Undergraduate Student Groups
The Program will co-sponsor guest lectures and provide funding for events and activities that have a scholarly component and contribute to the academic and research mission of the department and LSA. Latina/o Studies does not provide funding for charity, cultural or social events that do not have an educational component, or conference/research travel for individual students.

The Native American Studies program is pleased to co-sponsor lectures, exhibits, performances, and symposia that promote awareness of the history and/or culture of indigenous people (especially but not limited to Native Americans), settler colonialism, and the politics of race and racism in the United States. Faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate organizations are eligible to apply. Requests over $250 should be made at least one full semester in advance of the event.
