Our Mission

The Department of American Culture pursues socially responsive interdisciplinary scholarship, teaching, and learning that foster understanding of the complex struggles and creativity that have produced the diverse cultures of the United States and the Americas.

We seek to illuminate intersections of transnational, national, and diasporic identities such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, indigeneity, religion, and class. We bring the frameworks of ethnic studies into conversation with critical approaches to popular culture, literature, history, cultural studies, and social sciences, as well acknowledge and activism produced outside the university.

We strive to be on the leading edge of higher education for students of color, first-generation students, transfer students, students with disabilities, international, and LGBTQIA students.
